History and Facts about Paris Landmarks

It is great to visit different cities and sites around the world. It is even nicer to know a little about their history and facts. Since I'll be in Paris the last week of this year, I'm using this page to learn more about the Arc de Triomphe (great video by WorldSiteGuides above), the Eiffel Tower, Notre Dame and more famous Paris landmarks.

The official website for the Arc de Triomphe is http://www.arcdetriompheparis.com/. Their site has tons of great information about the arc. Here are a few facts, but don't neglect to read through their site.

The Arc de Triomphe was commissioned by Napoleon in 1806 to honor the French army - the Grande Armee. Construction was stopped between 1814 and 1826 after Napoleon was defeated at Waterloo and exiled. The Arc de Triomphe was finished in 1836. Napoleon never saw its completion as he died in 1821.

This next video by WorldSiteGuides "Eiffel Tower, Paris" offers many insights to the Eiffel Tower. For instance, Paris was not the first city considered for its location. The Eiffel Tower had originally been planned for Barcelona's 1888 Universal Exposition. Barcelona rejected the tower due to its costs and its odd appearance. Its designers later proposed the tower for Paris and its 1889 Universal Exposition and Paris accepted. Viva la France! Enjoy the video. The official site is https://www.toureiffel.paris/en

Another stop during our trip to Paris will probably be Notre Dame. Located on the Seine, Notre Dame was built over the course of almost 200 years (180 to be more precise). Planning began in 1160. Construction began in 1163 and the cathedral was completed in 1345. WorldSiteGuides posted their "Notre Dame de Paris" video in 2011. Watch it below. London April 2025

I flew to London for a few short days with my brother (Troy), his girlfriend (Polly) and met up with one of my old college roommates (Howie) while there.  4/18/25 (Friday) I flew from Pensacola (PNS) to Atlanta (ATL) where Troy and Polly were there waiting on me. We were all on the same overnight flight to London and landed at Heathrow (LHR). I do not think I slept any during the flight although this is usually how I fly.  4/19/25 (Saturday) Landing in London at Heathrow Saturday morning, the three of us took trains from Heathrow into London and eventually got off at the Tower Hill Station. We did take a few wrong turns along the way, but not by much. We did not end up in France or anything.  The Tower Hill Station was great for us as it is just a couple of blocks from Tower Hotel where we stayed with a fantastic view of Thames. The elevators need work, but the hotel is great. Stay there any chance you get to London. Get a river view room or even a view of the bridge if o...
